The beautiful landscape of Mpumalanga is cut through by rushing rivers, etching their way down from higher grounds to lower lying areas. One of the most revered rivers of the area, the Sabie, provides an exciting adventure for thrill seekers and novices alike.
As the morning emerges and the sun touches land, it’s time to put yourself against mother nature in the uncontrollable waters of the Sabie River. Equipping yourself with safety gear, you slide into your position in the small boat and imagine the adventures lying around every bend. You place your paddle in the water, and glide into the calm waters.
The gentle trickle of water starts you off at a leisurely pace, allowing you to enjoy the incredible greenery surrounding you. The forest is lush and you can hear the calls of several local birds, each with their own unique voice. The gentle water begins to quicken slightly and your surroundings are moving faster. What was initially a gentle hum of running water has taken on a more urgent tone that echos off the trees surrounding you. Small white caps crest the water and the visible flow of the river strengthens. Small leaves and dislodged flowers sweep past you as your paddles begin to feel more pressure.
Finally the water seems to reach a loud roar, and white foam now tops most visible surface areas. Slick grey and brown rocks jut out threateningly as your breath starts to quicken. Your arms strain to control your paddle as you approach the small drop. As the boat glides over the edge, your stomach gives a small lurch and you feel weightless for the slight instance of the fall. With a vigorous splash the boat evens out, and you begin the journey again.
